If this is your first time thinking about therapy as part of your life, these are some common questions that might help you as you begin the journey.
Why do people seek therapy?
People come into therapy for many reasons. Some need to process unexpected changes in their lives, while others seek self-exploration and personal growth. Some have realized that they are self-sabotaging and would like to understand how subconscious beliefs are holding them back. Some have been in abusive relationships, some just need to unload old baggage or get support making desired changes. Therapy can provide support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping for issues such as depression, anxiety, lack of confidence, relationship troubles, unresolved childhood issues, bereavement, spiritual conflicts, stress management, body image issues, and creative blocks. People seeking psychotherapy are willing to take responsibility for their actions, work towards self-change and create greater awareness in their lives.
What can I expect in a therapy session?
During sessions, you are expected to talk about the primary concerns and issues in your life. A session lasts about 50 minutes, but some people request longer sessions. Usually, weekly sessions are best. However, if crisis or extreme distress is happening, we may need more than one session per week, at least until the crisis passes. During the time between sessions it is beneficial to think about and process what was discussed. At times, you may be asked to take certain actions outside of the therapy sessions. It is important to be an active participant, both in and outside of the therapy sessions.
What are my goals are therapy?
If you aren’t sure what your goals are, our first task is to figure that out. Sometimes we first identify what is wrong, what is asking for attention and then the goals can become illuminated. Together we will seek to clearly understand where you have been, where you are presently and where you desire to go. During the course of therapy your goals may change. However, establishing a direction for therapy will help you get the most out of the experience.
What benefits can I expect from working with a therapist?
Therapy can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution. Many people find therapy helps them to have new emotional regulation skills, better communication, personal growth, better interpersonal relationships, and the skills to proudly manage the challenges of daily life. Some of the benefits available from therapy include: Self-awareness, clarity, resolution, self-confidence, stress reduction, anger management, better communication, more peace, joy and happiness.
Do you accept insurance?
I do not accept insurance. My fee is 125.00 per session and I can and do make adjustments to this on an individual basis. I do offer a sliding scale.
What is confidential?
The law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and a therapist. Information about you is not disclosed without permission. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule.
• If there is suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse. I am required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
• If a client is threatening serious harm to self or others. I will make every effort to enlist the client’s cooperation in insuring safety. If a client does not cooperate, further measures must be taken without permission in order to ensure the safety of all.
• I can be mandated by the court to release records.
